Adult Orthodontics: It’s never too late for your dream smile!

It’s never too late to achieve the confident, beautiful smile you always wanted. More and more at Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics, we’re hearing from adults who want a straighter smile. Either they didn’t keep up with their retainer and are hoping for their old smile back, or they never had orthodontics and would like to see the smile of their dreams in the mirror. Whichever boat you fall into, we’re here to help. While many people think of an orthodontic practice as a place for kids and teens, at Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics we also love treating adults.

Comfortable, Effective Treatment

Advances in orthodontic technology have made treatment more comfortable and precise than ever. Modern braces and clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are customized to your exact specifications as outlined by our Doctors. Combined with our (goop-free!) 3D scanner, you can expect better results, in shorter times, and a more comfortable experience from start to finish.

The Benefits

There are many benefits to orthodontic treatment for adults! Here are some to name a few:
A confident smile: There is nothing like wanting to show off your smile. Misaligned teeth cause many adults to feel self-conscious about their smiles.
Healthier gums: Food is more likely to get trapped and cause plaque buildup, which is harder to brush and appropriately floss, increasing the chances of gum disease (periodontal disease). Crowded teeth can cause redness and swelling of the gums.
Stronger teeth: Teeth are constantly put under pressure. Crooked teeth can receive more wear and tear and a misaligned bite can mean uneven force on your jaw. Trapped food in misaligned teeth can cause tooth decay.
Overall Improvement of health: A misaligned bite, worn or missing teeth can make it more difficult to fully chew food, causing gastrointestinal problems. Inflammation of the gums has been linked to heart disease and diabetes.

Treatment Options

Invisalign: When it comes to treating adults, clear aligners are the name of the game. The Invisalign System is a series of clear overlay templates called aligners that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth.

Damon Smile Braces: Our office is pleased to offer our patients passive self-ligating Damon Smile braces. Damon braces use a slide mechanism to hold the archwire, reducing the amount of pressure exerted on the teeth and allowing the teeth to move more freely, quickly, and comfortably. Thanks to these innovative new braces, achieving your perfect smile can be faster and easier than you ever thought possible!

Early Orthodontic Treatment: It’s About More than Just the Smile

Every parent wants their child to smile with confidence, and a consultation with an orthodontist is one of the best approaches to ensuring that goal. However orthodontic treatment, especially during your child’s younger years, has many benefits … beyond straight teeth and a healthy bite. At Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics we see children as young as seven, to prevent future issues and adjust for them before they become larger problems, which are more difficult or invasive to treat.

Early treatment can:

Traditionally, orthodontists may wait until age 12 or 13 to treat a crowding problem, but the problem isn’t going to get any better by waiting. Through early treatment we can regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, creating additional space for permanent teeth. This can lessen or decrease the possibility of permanent tooth extractions, reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth and can even help correct abnormal swallowing or speech problems.

A crossbite is when you close your mouth and some of your upper teeth are sitting inside your lower teeth — rather than on the outside. A trained eye can see early on if crossbites will be an issue as the rest of your child’s permanent teeth come in. The earlier treatment begins, the easier it will be because your child’s jaw is less developed at this early age and can be guided along the right path rather than working to reverse issues at a later age.

Early treatment (Phase 1), when indicated, can simplify later treatment (Phase 2). Children who undergo early treatment often have a much shorter second phase of treatment once their permanent teeth come in. This makes life easier for both them and you as their schedules get busier and busier.

At Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics we strive to make children’s visits comfortable and positive.

No more goop! We have a state-of-the-art, iTero® Element™ digital scanner, which is used to take 3D impressions on each child, allowing us to permanently retire that uncomfortable, gooey, impression material we all (not-so-fondly) remember.

Family oriented: We strive to provide a positive, warm and friendly atmosphere to all of our patients, especially young children. We know that the first impressions we make can impact their attitude toward not only orthodontic care but also healthcare as a whole.

New Normal, New Smile!

At Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics we’ve noticed a trend over the past year: more and more people are looking to straighten their teeth with orthodontics. Adults have always been interested in having a great smile but we think there’s a reason for this sharp increase in requests: they are looking to the future and ready to navigate the new normal with a new smile. As we return to our pre-covid (mask-less) routines again, many are seeking a Zoom-ready smile while they work from home while others who are heading back to the office are seeking that new and beautiful smile that they’ve always wanted for their grand return!

It’s not just any orthodontic treatment they’re after Invisalign is the most highly sought. Invisalign Clear Aligners are the way to go for adult orthodontic treatment. Not only do they take less time than traditional braces, but they’re virtually invisible! Plus, we can treat only the elements of your smile that are most important to you.

Get that new smile as we go fully maskless again!

Here’s how it works: we start with a digital scan of your teeth and then Dr. Woodfin and Dr. Cabassa use our digital imaging technology to map out a unique treatment plan and create custom aligners to guide your teeth along their journey. It will be important that you wear your aligners 22 hours per day – and since we’re all home more often these days, good hygiene will be easier to attain.

We know there are a lot of direct to consumer options out there – here’s why we think it’s important to seek orthodontic care at a local practice: Orthodontists MOVE BONES IN YOUR FACE. Your teeth are bones! Without proper x-rays you could cause serious damage to your jaw, bite and smile. Local orthodontists, like Dr. Woodfin and Dr. Cabassa, have spent years studying in dental school and then additional years of education to gain an Orthodontic specialty degree. The team at Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics has also been treating patients in the Pensacola area for over 25 years and is trusted by thousands of families in our community.

The Top Reasons Why You Should Only Seek Invisalign Treatment with an Orthodontist

It seems that there are many options for straightening teeth these days and there’s no question that Invisalign is a front-runner. You can enjoy virtually invisible teeth-straightening while continuing to eat the foods you enjoy, brush and floss your teeth normally for better oral health and minimize office visits. The choice is clear! However, you might wonder why it’s necessary to see an orthodontist for your Invisalign treatment. Here are the top reasons why only an orthodontist should treat you or your teen:

You only want to do this once. Do it right.

Everyone knows an orthodontist’s goals are straight teeth and a healthy bite. We ensure that the teeth, upper and lower jaws, gums and facial muscles are positioned so that you can bite, chew and speak well. Without taking these components into consideration, problems can arise, such as issues with the jaw joint (TMJ), headaches, excessive wearing or chipping of the teeth, premature tooth loss and gum problems.

Orthodontists identify the cause of the problem, and then solve it.

You may see crooked or gapped teeth. We see the cause of the problem. Orthodontists use their education, experience and expertise to delve deep to discover the root of the issue and solve it in a way that is healthy and sustainable– for an attractive smile and a lasting result.

Orthodontics goes beyond your teeth.

Orthodontists study facial esthetics and understand how tooth movement can change your facial profile, smile line and general appearance. We understand how it relates to the face and future growth changes and take a holistic, comprehensive approach to your treatment so that your overall appearance is considered along with your smile.

Orthodontists are specialists.

After our dental school education, orthodontists devote an additional 2-3 years to the study of only orthodontics. We practice orthodontics exclusively. We focus our continuing education on orthodontics and see hundreds of patients per month. We are uniquely positioned to use our knowledge and skills to help you get the best possible result. Where You Receive Your Health Care Is A Very Important Personal Decision. Remember that orthodontic treatment is not a product or device – it is a professional, medical service.

Each patients’ unique orthodontic needs, and their individual personalities, make my professional life rewarding and fulfilling. One of the primary reasons I chose to become an orthodontist is because it is an area of dental care that patients seek out: not just because of necessity, but because they want to change their lives.

Invisalign – The Clear Option for Orthodontics During Social Distancing

We live in strange times – gestures once taken for granted – handshakes, hugs, fist bumps – are now taboo; even our smiles are often hidden behind masks. But that doesn’t mean no one is seeing your smile. COVID-19 has meant socially distancing ourselves but it has also meant a boom in social media. Humans are social creatures and we’ve found new and creative ways to connect even while apart.

More selfies, virtual school, virtual meetings, and video chats are happening than ever before, which means we are even more up close and personal with our smiles. We all want to feel confident on screen – teens and adults alike. Self confidence is a huge factor in teen development and having a beautiful smile increases teen confidence when they’ve achieved the smile they’ve always wanted.

Now that the stay-at-home orders have been lifted, there is no reason to wait on getting the smile of your dreams for you or your child; and at Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics, we have combined the technology of Invisalign and Virtual Appointments, to make sure you are as safe as possible while achieving that smile.

Why is Invisalign a great choice right now?

While we are all allowed out and about again, we’re doing everything we can to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients.  Invisalign allows for fewer in-person appointments while still ensuring you get the expertise of trained and specialized orthodontists like Dr. Cabassa and Dr. Woodfin. It’s extremely important to have an expert orthodontist plan, execute, and monitor your orthodontic treatment to ensure the best outcome as well as maintain the health of your teeth during treatment.  To get started, we use a 3D scanner to take images of your teeth and bone structure in order to map out a customized treatment plan and to build custom aligners that will help straighten your smile – invisibly. That means less time in your mouth to get started.

Once your treatment plan is put in place, you will receive clear aligners to wear 22 hours a day – no skimping or treatment will take longer! We will want to see you for appointments, just like with braces, but with Invisalign we can space those appointments further out! The appointments can also be virtual so you don’t even have to leave your home.  During your treatment, you will receive a few batches of clear Invisalign aligners at a time. We then gauge your progress at appointments, and if all is going well, we move to the next set.

Invisalign allows us to help you attain the smile of your dreams- it’s the clear option. At Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics, we have the expertise with both orthodontics and technology to help you get that smile. Our fun and friendly office may look a bit different than it used to, but we’re still finding ways to make sure you feel the love while you’re here!

There is so much that we’re depriving ourselves of these days, don’t let the smile of your dreams be one of those things. We have flexible financing options available.

Call us today at (850) 477-2180 to schedule a free consultation– we can start virtually or in person – your choice!

Is Orthodontics Ever Done in an Emergency?

Orthodontic treatment can be performed quickly, if it is done safely and in a systematic way. There are times when a dental procedure might be considered an emergency. If you have a painful infection or trauma to the mouth. Or, if you have a loose piece of hardware that is poking you or causing discomfort. These are emergencies that need to be taken care of stat. They require the services of a dentist or orthodontist to intervene quickly so you need to make an appointment ASAP. In times like these, we need to move fast.

Woodfin Cabassa Orthodontics does not consider regular orthodontic treatment something that needs to be done in an emergency. Teeth just don’t move that way, at least not on purpose. In fact, we consider orthodontics like building a house. It takes expert planning and consideration before getting to work. We create an outline of where your teeth are now and assess any issues, like an overbite, crossbite or crowding. Then we put together a treatment plan that we will follow to ensure optimal results. We also work with your primary dentist to get appropriate dental records and confirmation that all routine dental care is completed before placing appliances. A good foundation will guarantee a positive outcome. All the specialists must come together to ensure the work is done the right way and in the right order.

Your orthodontic work is completed according to a timeline we develop from the beginning. Moving teeth and adjusting the jaw is not something that can be done overnight. (You’ve heard that Rome wasn’t built in a day!) But, we can move quickly as long as it is safe and reasonable for the work that needs to be done.

Can orthodontics be expedited if a patient wants it? Absolutely. If treatment can be done in a shorter time frame and in a safe manner, we will certainly oblige and discuss every option that is available. If all the requirements are met, we will move the process along as swiftly as possible. But remember that orthodontics must be performed in a systematic order. Neither Dr. Sal or Dr. Greg will ever “cut corners” just to get a patient in treatment on the same day of their initial exam.
